noasobi essey scene 10“ On Rocky Shore ”

At the end of the summer, I was at the northern tip of Honshu Island in Shimokita, Japan.
The camping ground where I had planned to stay was already closed for the season, so I reluctantly pitched my tent on rocky shore where there was still a little greenery left.

I got out my fishing rod, gleefully hoping to catch something for my evening meal.
But all I caught was some blowfish. After about an hour, I got tired of trying and gave up.

Then I went to the beach hoping to find at least something to nibble on, but all I could find were lcm-long sea snails.
Deciding that this was better than nothing, I chose about thirty of the biggest ones and boiled them in seawater.

They were surprisingly tasty.
And suddenly the negative thoughts that had been whirling about in my head disappeared, and I was filled with energy.
I went back to the beach to catch some more of the snails.
